WHY IS HYDRATION IMPORTANT?

It is important all year round, but specifically after summer months: hydration and its benefits. In summer it is very easy to dehydrate and lose more liquids than usual because of the excessive heat.

With the coming of autumn, we need to reabsorb all that has been previously lost: let’s see why and how to do so.

70% of our body is made up of water. This percentage helps us understand how essential it is for our health to properly hydrate our bodies.


We must also consider that most of the total amount of water present in the human body is stored in muscles and internal organs.


Because of this, when hydration levels are low, our body is significantly affected by it, as it impacts the digestive process, the elimination of toxins, skin health, articulations, and much more.

Moreover, dehydration causes unpleasant symptoms, among which thirst is only a first indicator: it ranges from excessive sleepiness and headache to, in worse cases, delirium and loss of consciousness. If a condition of dehydration is prolonged, it can lead to severe complications such as cerebral oedema, convulsions, and renal insufficiency.

HOW TO IMPROVE BODY HYDRATION?


Thirst is a basic indicator that our body needs water, but it is still important to hydrate properly regardless of this warning sign. There are many different ways to drink more:

  1. Keep a water bottle in sight as a visual reminder

  2. Set up an actual reminder on electronic devices or downloading specific apps for this purpose

  3. Drink at fixed times throughout the day: as soon as you wake up and right before bed, once every hour during your work shift, before and during meals (which also helps reduce calorie intake, as it helps fill the stomach).

  4. Eat water rich foods, especially fruits and vegetables

  5. Vary what you drink and make it more appealing by drinking teas (iced during the summer, hot in winter) and preparing or buying flavoured water.

  6. Eat different kind of vegetable soups, with the additional benefits provided by the vegetables in them.
