How have the symptoms of COVID-19 changed?

First of all, it must be said that the symptoms of COVID-19 vary in that once the virus has found a host, it spreads throughout the body. Some of the varying factors include age, sex, genetics, previous chronic diseases, and the state of the host’s immune system.

COVID-19: LET'S GET TO THE POINT

The symptoms of COVID-19 are different and can appear after an incubation period of 2-11 days and can last as long as 14 days.

Some of the most common symptoms are:

  • Fever equal to or greater than 37.5°C

  • Fatigue

  • Coughing

  • Respiratory difficulties

  • Loss or decrease of smell

  • Loss or decrease of taste

  • Runny nose

  • Sore throat

VARIANTS

In addition to varying according to the affected bodily region, mutation of the genome is typical and completely normal in RNA viruses like COVID-19.

A variant of a virus is generated when, as it multiplies within the host's cells, it undergoes one or more modifications (known as ‘mutations’) within the genome, making it different from the original virus.

Mutations of this type have been observed since the beginning of the pandemic.

Some variants did not have a direct and significant impact on the survival of the virus, while others did.

Those who’ve had it contribute to its survival. The virus survives by becoming more contagious or by ‘circumventing’ the individual's acquired immunity as a result of natural infection or vaccine.

COVID-19 variants are born from the mutation of the protein present in the virus, which allows it to attach to the host body’s cells.

The Delta variant appears to present the same symptoms. The exception seems to be the Omicron variant, whose symptoms appear milder and of shorter duration.

The Omicron 2 variant has also recently developed and presents the same symptoms as the Omicron variant, but a greater level of contagiousness of up to 30% has

been noted.

STRENGTHENING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Cerebral stress is the leading cause of nervous breakdowns, otherwise known as neurasthenia. How can cerebral stress be prevented with physical activity? Can moderate or low intensity exercise relieve stress?

Nervous breakdowns are associated with a state of psychophysical fatigue in which a person feels crushed by either a sudden or constant disturbance. The high stress load can be attributed to many external causes, such as environment, social relationships, or economic/financial issues. However, it is important to remember that medical manuals do not define a nervous breakdown as a disease. Although it is a serious condition, it should not be viewed as an illness.

WHAT TO DO TO BE BETTER

Some studies report an alteration of neurotransmitters, the hormones that transfer messages within the brain. With this in mind, it is possible that adjusting the balance of hormones and neurotransmitters could be a remedy.

Prevention must be considered a winning weapon and can be categorised into two types: primary prevention (a series of behaviours preventing the onset of a problem) or secondary prevention (the reduction or containment of harmful effects once the

problem has already occurred).

In both cases, moderate physical activity brings great health benefits for many reasons. Here are some suggestions:

  • OUTDOOR WALKS: walking, especially among nature, for at least 30 minutes a day helps eliminate toxins. What about hormone regulation? Brisk walking increases the production of endorphins, a hormone that causes, among other things, a sense of relaxation.

  • EATING WELL: although you might hear this a lot, it is also very commonly done wrong. Many people resort to do-it-yourself diets to try to lose a few kilos; however, it’s not simply a matter of cutting calories, but also giving your body the nourishment it needs to function.

  • IMPROVING SLEEP QUALITY: through a series of behaviours, you can improve your sleep hygiene. Among these, the most important are:

    1. Not eating at least half an hour before going to bed

    2. Always going to bed at the same time

    3. Keeping your mobile in another room

    4. Having a bedtime routine

    5. Not sleeping outside of your own bed

    6. If you can’t sleep, don't lay awake in bed

  • MEDITATION AND YOGA: take care of your mental relaxation through meditation and physical relaxation through yoga. These will provide direct benefit to your psychophysical well-being. These secular disciplines are backed up by history and science. Did you know that people with brain damage have been shown to respond better to therapy when they undergo meditation and yoga courses? This has been shown in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tests.

COMPLICATIONS OF MENTAL STRESS

It is important not to underestimate stress and, even though it is not considered an illness, it is important to talk to your doctor, who will know how to approach the issue. Episodes of a nervous breakdown can be part of a more complex anxiety disorder, depression, or hormonal changes typical of old age. They could also be confused with a neurodegenerative disorder diagnosis.

In any case, taking time to relax and set up new, healthy habits like walking outside, going on a balanced diet or detox, or improving your quality of sleep can be the way to a new life.

Heinz Beck has designed the PALAZZO FIUGGI DIET to combine taste with the nutritional properties of food.

HEINZ BECK

The three-star chef’s philosophy on nutrition is this: FOOD AS MEDICINE. He employs a healthy, naturopathic style in the kitchen so as to provide the perfect combination of flavour and nutrients.

Not only does he prepare delicious food, but he also has a profound understanding of macro and micronutrients and how they affect the body.

Dr. David Della Morte Canosci, who has studied the impact of nutrition on patients with chronic diseases for many years, teamed up with Heinz Beck to create a diet plan that unites nutrition and medicine.

Nutrition has very high protective values in terms of primary prevention (i.e. reducing the risk of pathological onset) and secondary prevention (i.e. managing a chronic condition that has already been diagnosed).

MACRONUTRIENTS

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Macronutrients are foods that provide nourishment and energy to the body and provide beneficial metabolic effects:

  • CARBOHYDRATES (glucides): all sugars, bread, pasta, and fruit.

  • PROTEINS (protides): meat, fish, eggs, and low-fat cheeses.

  • FATS (lipids): animal-based (e.g. butter) or vegetable-based (e.g. olive oil)

  • A BALANCED DIET

Weight loss should not be the only goal of dieting. It should also be to introduce better nourishment to the body, particularly the muscles, organs, bones, skin, and even hair.

MICRONUTRIENTS

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHERE THEY CAN BE FOUND?

Macronutrients should make up the majority of the nutrients you consume. This is because they produce most of the energy a body needs to perform basic functions. Micronutrients, on the other hand, must be introduced in smaller quantities.

They are very important and can make the difference between health and well-being or malaise and disease! Examples of essential micronutrients include vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K, biotin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, and macroelements such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chlorine, magnesium, and sulphur. Also, microelements like iron, zinc, copper, cobalt, iodine, fluorine, manganese, and much more.

Micronutrients are everywhere. Dietary supplements and nutritious foods are great sources of these.

It is misleading to say what is good for what. We can easily associate the absence of vitamins with a particular state of malaise, further demonstrating the key role that micronutrients play in healthy eating.

FOOD AS MEDICINE

At Palazzo Fiuggi, a team of experts will generate nutrition and exercise plans for you. Complementary therapy services are also available to ensure psychophysical well-being. There is no magic formula that can help you reach this goal.

Our method involves getting you on a diet plan specially tailored to your needs.

Personalised medicine is the future. The multidisciplinary team of Palazzo Fiuggi will create a customised diet plan based on the diagnostics relating to your psychophysical state.

Excess weight should be viewed from the standpoint of the pathology involved, rather than from an aesthetic approach. It is a sign that the body is metabolising excessive amounts of calories. Following the in-depth, personalised diet set by our experts will guarantee weight loss as well as initiate a virtuous cycle of healthy habits.
