Mental fatigue is a very common condition, especially in this particular period: what should we do?

If the hectic life can normally lead to stress and mental fatigue, the pandemic period we are experiencing certainly does not improve the situation.

When the brain finds itself in stressful conditions it can become overloaded. This leads to an interruption of its regular functions resulting in disabling effects.

Studies on chronic stress show repercussions mainly on short-term memory; however, also the risk of neuronal loss can occur.

There are several signs that indicate a state of mental fatigue. They usually can be:

  • difficulty concentrating;

  • memory lapses;

  • sleepiness;

  • slowdown in cognitive responses;

  • unstable mood;

  • sleep disorders.

The remedies to control mental fatigue are various. However, it is essential to try to anticipate and prevent states of stress.

Studies have shown that keeping us mentally active by studying, talking to people, reading, exercising and, in general, by trying to be more receptive and motivated helps us to soothe and avoid periods of fatigue and mental stress.

Furthermore, sleep is one of the most important aspects and it is fundamental for the proper functioning of the brain.

Among the remedies to promote relaxation and the elimination of stressors are:

  • reduce the work or study load;

  • sleep at least 8 hours a night;

  • set a daily routine;

  • practice sports or walk outdoors;

  • follow a healthy and balanced diet;

  • reduce the consumption of caffeine and alcoholic beverages before going to sleep;

  • take food supplements of magnesium, potassium and omega 3 (under medical indication);

  • devote moments to relax;

  • practice meditation or yoga.

Taking some time off to relax is therefore essential but not sufficient. At Palazzo Fiuggi, a multidisciplinary team will be able to take care of your well-being completely, thanks to both traditional and oriental medicine.
